Many of you who read my letters and blog know the importance I place on the ideas of Tony Wagner, Harvard Professor of Education and author of the Global Achievement Gap. I think there is no other single analyst who is more perceptive and more compelling on the topic of how our students' education needs to change, significantly, to best prepare them for their future in our fast-changing world.
Our faculty and board members read his book last summer and discussed it in the fall, and now we are all excited about his forthcoming visit to Tucson and St. Gregory March 31st and April 1st.
All parents are invited and warmly encouraged to attend his address the evening of March 31st at 7pm, here at St. Gregory, on the topic which is best captured in his book's subtitle: Why Even our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Skills our Children Need-- and What We Can Do About it.
I hope you will attend: RSVP here, please.

March 24th the MS band, US band, concert choir, and St. Gregory Strings will be performing "The New Broadway" featuring "Phantom of the Opera", "Beauty and the Beast", "Pirates of the Carribbean" and a return performance of "Equus". ("Equus" was performed in the fall and was such an outstanding success that we've brought it back for an even better performance). The evening will start at 6 p.m. with a pre-event light meal for concert-goers sponsored by the Fine Arts committee. Also, we will be selling raffle tickets for a drawing of a dinner out for two and a movie ticket package. Tickets are three dollars apiece, or two for five dollars. The drawing will be held that night.

Faculty Developments: Middle School

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Mann to the position of middle school English teacher for the coming year; Mr. Mann will succeed the retiring Cheryl Pickrell. Mr. Mann has taught middle school English for sixteen years, most recently for a long stint at Orange Grove Middle School, where he worked with Mr. Woodall, and he comes to us with Mr. Woodall's strong endorsement. Mr. Mann is a graduate of the a fine Maryland independent school, Landon, and holds a BA in Philosophy, with a secondary teaching certificate from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire; he also earned an MA in English Literature from the University of Arizona.
In other developments, Mrs. Debbie Creeden, who kindly stayed on to teach Math part-time again this year after her husband's retirement last year, has decided to complete her two-year St. Gregory tenure. We appreciate greatly her willingness to contribute her teaching excellence to St. Gregory students. We are reviewing our needs for the coming year and will begin making plans soon for the fulfillment of her responsibilities in next year's middle school.

The boys' volleyball team showed resiliency in a three-set loss against Catalina High School on Monday. Athletes Alex Lunt and Jacob Valdez stepped up in a big way. adjusting to new positions with setter Jasim El-Ali out due to sickness. Sam Silverman led the team in kills. On Wednesday the team played Amphitheater High School, where they dominated and won in two sets. Senior Zach Mulder said, "We were just really clicking together for the first time." Nice job!
