Happy Friday: A few notes for you this week.
1. Our Middle School Head search advisory committee has been formed and will have its first meeting next week: this is a committee composed of three parents and three teachers, and it will meet weekly with me until we have made an appointment for the next Middle School Head.
2. Please do your best to return re-enrollment contracts promptly; we are busily processing applications for next year's enrollment and also planning for next year's staffing and courses, and it is hugely helpful to us, and especially to our valued teachers, to be able to confirm enrollment numbers in the next few weeks. If you need more time, or have questions, please contact our Admissions Director Christine Thornton.
3. We are very excited here about our forthcoming visit and public address by renowned Harvard scholar and educational reform expert, Tony Wagner, author of the Global Achievement Gap. He will speak here to parents and community members Wednesday, March 31 at 7pm, and we very much hope you all attend. This is also a great event to which to bring friends! RSVP (required) here, please. More information to follow. |

Seniors and Freshmen Work on the International School of Tucson Mural
|
Seniors and freshmen worked cooperatively on Sunday the 31st of January to bring a fabulous mural to closer to completion. The mural on the preschool building of the International School of Tucson portrays the earth and children from a variety of cultures. This fits with IST's theme of "Values for a Global Society." There will be another painting party soon. Stay tuned!

French Club Crêpe Sale Benefits the American Red Cross
|
Nutella, strawberries, bananas...The French Club had a crêpe sale at the basketball game in January and decided to send all the profits ($100) to the American Red Cross for Haiti relief. Merci to mom Chloe Igini for making the crêpes ahead of time. This also gave us a chance to debut the new French Club t-shirt designed by Isabella Catalano and Juliet Wilhelmi. The theme is "When you fall in love with français...crazy things happen!" You have to see it to believe it.

College Counseling Corner
|
Attention Junior Parents:
Classes with the juniors regarding the college search process have begun. As we head further into February, I want to keep you updated on our progress and let you know what you can expect from the college counseling office. Each junior has a copy of College Match: A Blueprint for Choosing the Best School for You and is currently working on the surveys and questionnaires in Chapters 1-3. During our classes and meetings, we will continue to use the information in the book to help guide our conversations. During the first class and individual meetings, we covered the following topics: PSAT review, test preparation options and testing calendar, transcript review, goal-setting, introduction to self-assessments, Naviance tour, what colleges are looking for, building a college list, and college visits. By February 24th, all juniors are expected to complete their first college lists on the “Colleges I’m Interested In” page of Naviance. This list should reflect initial interests, such as geographic location, size, academic or extracurricular programs. Once the list is posted on Naviance, I will suggest colleges to research based on the conversations from the individual meetings, a review of the high school transcript, and initial test score data. In March, I will request individual appointments with you and your son or daughter. This is a chance for me to meet you and to address questions and concerns you might have regarding the college selection and admission process. During this meeting, we will also discuss your son’s or daughter’s college interests, review the initial college list, and discuss the order of selectivity of these schools. Some of you have already begun the college conversation with your son or daughter, and I look forward to being a liaison in that interaction. Kate Schmidt Director of College Counseling

It's Not Too Late! Lights! Camera! Auction! March 5th
|
The Lady Hawks completed their season on February 5th with a grueling loss to an unbelievably talented Gila Bend. The Hawks ended the season without a berth in the state tournament, which saddened everyone. But after a week of perspective, it is quite clear that the Lady Hawks were one of the elite teams in the state (having played 5 state-tournament-bound teams and beaten 3 of them during the regular season). The Hawks also boasted the toughest season in 1A as ranked by the AIA and finished the season 12th in the state according to Powerpoint rankings. Seniors Emma Finkelstein, Jordan Davies, and Taryn Parsons were honored at a lovely senior night that included poster-size action shots of the gals, gorgeous flowers, and delicious food and cake. All this was organized by the Lady Hawk parents, without whose support the team would never be as successful as it is! So thanks to everyone for all the support. It was a great season!

The upper school boys basketball team completed their season as 1A South region champions and a Boyd Baker Tournament championship. Both the boys and girls had successful seasons and provided fun and entertainment for the St. Gregory community. Commonly heard among the MS students are statements that they'd love to shoot the '3' like Nate Grobstein or Blake Gephart;to dribble through defenses like Frankie or dunk like Jayson Rickel would be the best. Our upper school students and athletes are making impressions on their fans and supporters in the middle school. Those middle schoolers will be the valued future and hopefully will extend the success they enjoyed watching. There is much involved in hosting basketball games and there are so many to thank for all they did this season. Extending the "thank you" beyond the team, we are grateful to student managers Ashley Tassone, Ana Rodriguez, and Alejandra Castaneda. Coaches Jason Apodaca, Michelle Berry, Darrell Patton, and Holly Wasson provided the athletes with the leadership necessary for the team to succeed on and off the court. The parents volunteered in every imaginable capacity. Lisa Gephart was instrumental in organizing the eager group, and parents did it all. They collected admissions, worked the snack bar, donated food to be sold in the snack bar, donated snacks for road trips, paid for dinner at the state tournament, did laundry at the state tournament, filmed our games and those of our opponents, took action pictures of the team members, made posters from these pictures, donated funds to alleviate the cost to players, announced at home games, provided half-time snacks for the team, made hotel and dinner arrangements for the team at the state tourney, and stayed loyal to the program from start to finish. Whew! By the way, the snack bar netted just under $1500.00. Thank you!
