National Merit Scholarship Finalists
|
Four St. Gregory students have advanced from Semifinalist to Finalist status in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition. We extend congratulations to Jason Huo, Safatul Islam, Jacob Lifton, and Amanda Liu.
In the fall of 2009, 1,526,540 students from 21,981 high schools took the PSAT, which entered them in the 2010 National Merit Competition. There are now 15,000 Finalists, from whom the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will select 8,200 winners. Students will be notified of scholarship offers beginning in March. Good luck to our four Finalists!
The fourth annual Poetry Out Loud Contest sponsored by the English Department at St. Gregory was held on Friday, January 29 in the Nickerson Performing Arts Center. There were eleven contestants who each recited two poems before the entire school. Poems ranged from the classic sonnets of John Donne to modern poetry. The eleven were either winners in their respective English classes or at-large participants. Three judges decided the first three places. Thanks go to Dr. Kate Oubre and Ms. Elizabeth Young for preparing contestants and accuracy judging and prompting.
The winners are:
- first: Steffi McNerney
- second: Jason Huo
- third: Andie Quinn
Steffi will compete in the state contest in Phoenix on Friday, March 5, with the chance to go to the national finals in Washington, DC in late April
St. Gregory National Geographic Bee Winners
|
Congratulations to sixth grader Nathaniel Whitthorne for winning the St. Gregory National Geographic Bee on January 27th. Rounding out the top three were second place finisher, Noah Sanders, and third place finisher, Nikki Baim. The entire middle school took part in the opening round with six students from each grade advancing to the semi-final round. The field was finally reduced to Noah, from the seventh grade, and Nathaniel for the Championship Round. As the school winner, Nathaniel completed a 100-question written exam and awaits the final results to determine his eligibility to compete in the state-level tournament. Ultimately, he is eligible for a chance to compete in the national competition, hosted by Alex Trebek, and earn a $25,000 college scholarship. Congratulations and well-done to all of the participants, and to Nathaniel as we anticipate the results from the National Geographic Society.
American Mathematics Competition
|
Fifty upper school students will be taking the AMC-12 mathematics test on Tuesday, February 9th during homeroom and E-block. The test will take place in the upper school mathematics classrooms and room assignments will be posted in the cafeteria and on the math classrooms that day.

Upper School basketball completes the regular season with games at home against Gila Bend Friday, February 5. This will be senior night for the boys and girls as it will be the last home game for them. The boys' team will travel to Prescott February 12 and 13 for games in the state tournament, and we will know soon if the girls will go to state, also. Congratulations to the boys for winning the 1A south region! A "thank you" goes to all who attended the games Friday night against Gilbert Christian. Middle school and upper school families packed the house and were vocal in their support of the Hawk basketball teams. The atmosphere was loud, fun, and exciting. Middle school will begin practice for basketball February 18 3:30 - 5:00. Practice times are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 3:30 - 5:00. Games begin March 2 for girls and March 4 for boys. The season concludes the last week of April for B teams and the first week of May for A teams. |

Upper School Girls' Soccer
|

The girls finished their season strong by beating two 3A schools by a combined score of 15 - 0 during the last week of the regular season. This qualified them for entry into the state tournament. Twelve teams qualified out of thirty-plus teams from around the state. St. Gregory is a 1A school, based on attendance. When a sport does not carry enough teams at a particular level they have to "play up". 3A schools can have over 1,000 students. St. Gregory must compete in 1A - 3A combined. Of the twelve teams at the state tournament, six were 3A, five were 2A, and St. Gregory was the only 1A school to qualify. We lost to a speedy team from Gilbert Christian but celebrated the success of the season. |
