Advisory programs are increasingly recognized as among the most valuable vehicles schools can implement for strengthening the school community and the relationships between teachers, students, and parents; they are also excellent forums for schools to better encourage shared inquiry, self-reflection, and activity-planning to bolster character development among students.

David Streight is the Executive Director of the National Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education and an expert on character education.  He is the editor of Parenting for Character: Five Experts, Five Practices, and is currently working on a guide to high- quality advisory programs in schools.    Wednesday evening, January 27, here in our St. Gregory theater, he will speak to parents on the topic "The Five Parenting Practices that Maximize the Chances of Raising a 'Good Kid.'"  He will also discuss the value of advisory programs for schools as they work to educate students to be "good kids."

Thursday David will spend the entire day with our faculty and administration, working with us to develop a new advisory program for our students to be implemented next year.  An article David has written about advisory programs is available here.

Just a reminder to parents:  When you contact faculty members by email about your child's academic progress, please copy me on those communications.  Your child's teachers copy me when they are in touch with you, as well.  It's helpful in that I then have the "big picture" of academic concerns. We can work together as a faculty to identify patterns, communicate with your child and with you, and help your child to do his or her best work in the classroom.

Mending the torn fabric of Haiti

A robust group of 8th grade students have created the Middle School Mend Society, whose charter is, “To mend the torn fabric of humanity one stitch at a time through purposeful community service projects.”

This energized group of caring students will be collecting first-aid and hygiene items that will then be packaged and shipped to the Haitian relief efforts by the Tucson-based World Care organization www.worldcare.org. Some of these beautiful, thoughtful students shared with me that they were particularly inspired to create the Mend Society as a result of reading and reflecting deeply on the marvelous classic, “Of Mice and Men” (7th grade English class). Is this not a ringing endorsement of using rigorous, thoughtful literature that provokes and leads students to connect their learning to real-world experiences? Mercy, these kids are so much more mindful in their thinking and learning here at St. Gregory!

Please, as you are able, encourage and support your student’s efforts to collect these much-needed items to be turned in for collection here at school over the next couple of weeks. Then, if you have not already done so, grab your own copy of, “Of Mice and Men” and create your own vision for “mending the torn fabric . . .”

Wonder What The Students Are Reading?

Wondering what the students are reading? "Three Cups of Tea" by Mortenson & Relim is known as one of the books that changes the way people think about changing the world.
This illustration was drawn by Isabella Catalano in her art class.
This is just one example of interdisciplinary projects. Isn't it nice to know that our children can read about changing the world through their own actions?

More Sports

The middle school softball team will try to end its season on a positive note in the league tournament next week.

It’s been a difficult season in terms of wins and losses. The Hawks have won two games and lost nine. However, the team has remained positive and shown considerable improvement over the course of the season.

The Hawks finished the regular season with a strong showing in a loss to St. Michael’s, one of the top teams in the league. Seventh grade pitcher Mallory Murray struck out 13 batters in the game for her best performance of the season. She also had two hits against one of the most difficult pitchers in the league. Josie Krajnak has been one of the most consistent hitters on the team while working hard at catcher.

Alana Gonzales and Alex Valencia each have a home run this season while also playing major roles in the field, Alana mostly at pitcher and Alex as the team’s first-baseman.

The Hawks will travel to Academy of Tucson on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game in the single-elimination tournament.
