The single greatest way you can help strengthen our school's future is by sharing the word about St. Gregory's excellence, and one of the very best ways you can do that is to invite and encourage friend/relatives/neighbors/co-workers and anyone else you know to attend our Preview, Sunday January 24. Engaging, active, and fun, this event will articulate and demonstrate the great qualities of a St. Gregory education; visitors will meet our teachers and see them in action inside our terrific classrooms. You can do the inviting yourself, and/or you can forward an email I will send to you myself with an open house invite, or you can just send us a name with address or email and we can do the inviting. Whichever way is most comfortable to you, please help us spread the word about this event in particular, and the exceptional quality of a St. Gregory education in general.

There is still time to sign up for conferences with your child's teachers next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Please remember to attend with your student to talk with teachers about academic progress and goals for the second semester. Rather than just a pleasant conversation, a conference which includes the learner can actually be productive, and that is our objective. If the conference times (1-4 pm Tuesday and Wednesday, January 20-21) do not work for you, please let me or teachers know so that we can find a time that does. Remember that conferences can also be scheduled as the need arises, so please be in touch. Faculty members are also terrific about responding to emails from parents of their students. If you need the information necessary to sign up for conferences again, please don't be embarrassed to call the office and ask! Good weekend to everyone, Susan

Always Asking the Big Question Our school (teachers and parents together) must always be asking the big question, “What do we want our children to know and be able to do in the 21st century?” How would you answer that question as a parent? If you have not done so already, I encourage you to read David Brook’s (NY Times) article, “Tech-savvy Israel surviving world’s economic crisis” op-ed piece. Then take a moment to reflect on how you and I use the word “innovation” around StG. The word "innovation" is being thrown around a lot today in schools and in the corporate world, so much so that it is becoming just so much gray noise. At StG we are pushing the definition further with our students to communicate thinking that is: 1) creative, 2) inventive, 3) ingenious, and 4) original. The challenge for our teachers is to ensure that their lessons adequately reflect this broader definition of innovation. A paragraph to take from Brook’s article reads: “Tel Aviv has become one of the world’s foremost entrepreneurial hot spots. Israel has more high-tech start-ups per capita than any other nation on earth, by far. It leads the world in civilian research-and-development spending per capita. It ranks second behind the U.S. in the number of companies listed on NASDAQ. Israel, with 7 million people, attracts as much venture capital as France and Germany combined. As Dan Senor and Saul Singer write in “Start-Up Nation: The story of Israel’s Economic Miracle,” Israel now has a classic innovation cluster, a place where tech obsessives work in close proximity and feed off each other’s ideas.” Something is going on in Israel that might help us to answer the big question, “What do we want our children to know and be able to do in the 21st century?” I propose that we begin with the end in mind by asking: “What do we want our country to look like?” After reading the Brook’s article two things are clearer to me:1) Conducting a robust conversation among ourselves about what innovation looks like at StG would serve us well and 2) We need to find out what they are doing in classrooms in Israel that prepares their students for the 21st century and the thriving Israeli economy.

Items Needed for the Winter Play
|
For the winter play, Ms. Bodden is looking for two bench seats from a car (they don't have to match) and a children's plastic slide (like one from a playset). These items do not have to be in great shape but will be used to sit/slide on. If you have either of these items or a lead on where to acquire them, please email Lisa Bodden at lbodden@stgregoryschool.org. Thanks!

A soccer is growing and maturing. Carter and Garrett Bakarich have played lately like they are channeling Pele or Garrincha. Connor McGinniss and Carter were our goal scorers this week. Also the hard play of Harper Karnas and Annie Kruger supports the team well. We added a new Swedish student, Robin, who likes to kick the ball: Welcome, Robin! Next week we will meet the challenge of a game every sporting day. Next week big, beautiful play! Coach Clashman

St. Gregory hosted Florence on Thursday. Florence came in with a 6-1 record and boasting a #2 state ranking. Athena Roesler scored first, putting us up 1-0. The MS B soccer team finished their season undefeated as they won each of their ten games. The season concluded at Tucson Country Day, where they won 4-0. Raymond Roesler scored all four, adding to his season total of 23 goals in the ten games. This group of seventh grade athletes has yet to lose a game this year. They went 13-0 in football and now 10-0 in soccer. There will no doubt be a bright future for their teams at St. Gregory!
