Mr. Woodall Goes to China

Some of you may have noticed Mr. Woodall's absence this week, and he is away again next week, as well.   What is surprising to me is that we haven't done a better job explaining where he is.  Mr. Woodall is traveling for two weeks in China, serving an an official on an evaluation team accrediting three international schools, in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. He is doing so as an educational expert, and it is an honor that a St. Gregory administrator was selected for this work.  He is also learning first-hand about international and Chinese education, knowledge he will be bringing back to St. Gregory when he returns October 19.

Ms. Heintz writes below about our ninth graders pioneering for their St. Gregory schoolmates as our first participants in the CWRA test. Because we are the first school in Arizona (public, private or charter) to take the CWRA, it is also true that our ninth graders will be the first Arizonans to participate!  I have written widely already about the CWRA on my blog, and I intend also to post an additional, detailed essay about it next Monday or Tuesday for those of you who want to understand it better.

Testing in the Upper School
On Wednesday, October 14, all sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The PSAT measures abilities which are important in college level work.  On the same day, freshmen will take the College Work Readiness Assessment, or CWRA, which Mr. Martin has mentioned in his communications with families.  We're excited to be able to have our freshmen complete this online assessment, which will provide a baseline with which to compare their performances at the end of the senior year.  The CWRA measures students' ability to "think critically, reason analytically, solve problems, and write well" and is not a multiple choice test.  Please click on the link above for more information about this assessment.

We do limited standardized testing at St. Gregory, and we do not teach to these tests, certain that our curriculum provides a more-than-adequate foundation.  When we do test, it is for a variety of reasons: to accumulate data with which to inform curricular decisions and to compare our students to other independent school students (the Comprehensive Testing Program, or CTP, in grades 9 and 10); to gather data about our students' preparation over four years (the CWRA in grades nine and twelve) which will also inform curricular decisions; to gain information about our students' engagement with and attitude towards their education (the High School Survey of Student Engagement in grades nine through twelve), and to provide our students some experience with standardized tests before the need to take them for college admission (the PSAT in grades ten and eleven, CTP in grades nine and ten).

All we ask of you as parents is that to be sure your child has a good breakfast the morning of the test!

From the Development Office

Tuition pays for your students’ core educational program, but each and every year St. Gregory works to provide an ever-stronger educational experience for our students.  Contributions to St. Gregory’s annual giving campaigns provide us with the tools we need to strengthen the school’s programs, faculty, and facilities; and to maintain a vibrant and diverse student community.

St. Gregory has two major fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Fund for the Future
This year’s annual campaign goal is $400,000.  The first $200,000 has already been raised from donors who challenge the rest of the community to raise the remaining $200,000.  Funds are used during the school to support existing programs and introduce new initiatives. Participation counts!  Your contribution is a vote of confidence in St. Gregory, and high participation rates boost St. Gregory’s reputation among major donors and foundations.

Tuition Tax Credit Campaign
The tuition tax credit program allows you to put your tax dollars to work right here at your school.  When you make a tax credit contribution to support financial aid at St. Gregory, you can deduct it directly from your state taxes (up to $1,000 for married tax payers and $500 for single filers), and because it is a dollar-for-dollar credit, it costs you absolutely nothing!

We hope that every member of the St. Gregory community will support our programs and students by making a gift to the Fund for the Future and to the Tuition Tax Credit Campaign.  You will receive more information on both campaigns in the coming months. You may also visit our website, call, or stop by the office with questions or to make a donation.

Fun with Freshman Class on Mt. Lemmon

Recently, the 9th grade class journeyed up to Mt. Lemmon for the annual overnight retreat in the cool(er) Ponderosa pine forest. We spent the afternoon and evening problem-solving and team-building with a variety of challenging activities--everything from "traversing a nitro hallway" and "crossing through a lethal spider's web without waking the evil spider" to creating a homeroom crest and performing a rap song.  On Friday morning, local author Ms. Laila Halaby, writer of our English summer reading novel, West of the Jordan, conducted a discussion where she responded to our students' letters and helped us understand the socio-political geography of the Middle East as well as her writing process.  Then students participated in three workshops:  a storytelling session with Mr. Matt Nelson, a communication/conflict resolution workshop with Mr. Fred Roberts, and a writing workshop with Ms. Halaby on perspective to help students consider challenging issues arising in their own creative story for English.  Thanks to all of the ninth graders for their active and enthusiastic participation, and to our workshop leaders, our outstanding senior peer leaders (Emma Finkelstein, Sarah Mann, Zach Mulder, and Cailtin Wynkoop), the Family Association for their assistance in feeding our hungry masses, and our additional faculty chaperone, Mr. Kevin Rolle, for making this Freshman Retreat a great success.

IST Students visit French classes

On October 1, a group of International School of Tucson second grade students visited St. Gregory . The students, all in the French section of their school, had been studying "wants" versus "needs", and they were curious about what facilities the big kids' school would have. After French 2 regaled them with the  song "Une Fourmis Rouge", the second graders attended the AP French class. They asked a series of questions in French of the AP students, including "What would you like to change about your school?" and "What profession would you like to have?" Then, after a few games and songs, AP French students led them on a school tour. This included "flaming bubbles" in the physics lab (thanks, Mr. Conner), a video about Roman sites (thanks, Mr. Clashman), and a quick game of soccer. The IST students concluded that St. Gregory was the cat's pajamas, as we are lucky to have such great facilities.
The International School of Tucson is an independent preschool and elementary school with dual language immersion. It is located near the U of A.

Middle School Sports

Tennis finished off the season with a tournament involving seventy players representing five schools. St. Gregory was well-represented as nearly the entire team won at least one round. David Strong continued his dominance, winning the boys singles crown. David went undefeated this season against top competition. Michael Rosenberg and Charlie Clark teamed up to win the boys' doubles title. Hannah Sawyer and Caroline Nore finished second in girls' doubles. The final team point total had Pusch Ridge winning with 30 points, St. Gregory 23, Desert Christian 11, St. Michael's 1, Basis 0.
The girls' volleyball team continues to improve, taking defending champ St. Michael's to the limit three games before coming up just short. On October 12th Tucson Country Day comes to StG  as well as Pusch Ridge on Thursday the 15th. There will be three matches against Pusch with A,B, and C matches played at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00. Tuesday Oct 13th we will host St. Cyril's in a cross-over league match, as St. Cyril's plays in a league of Catholic schools. It makes for a fun change of pace. The format will be very different as we will play B and C matches in the gym simultaneously on parallel courts beginning at 3:45. The A match will begin when B and C are done, or approximately 4:45.
The A football team has run its record to 6-2 and has a home game Tuesday October 13th against St. Michael's. The B Team is off to a 9-0 start, which indicates a promising future.
