FROM
THE HEADMASTER
“Leaders are
custodians of a nation’s ideals, of the beliefs it cherishes, of its
permanent hopes, of the faith which makes a nation out of a mere aggregation
of individuals.”
- Walter Lippman The search is over; the selection made; the choice is
worthy. In December, the search
process for St. Gregory’s permanent next Head of School was completed.
Jonathan Martin, former Head of Saklan Valley School in CA,
received the unanimous vote of the St. Gregory School Board of Trustees to be
appointed the school’s 5th headmaster. I know that each
member of the St. Gregory School community and “family” joins me in
congratulating Jonathan Martin on his selection and appointment. You have read and learned
about Jonathan, his family, and his professional credentials and successes
elsewhere including his website (www.21k12.net). He is considered
to be a good person, educator, and administrator. Without hesitation I
will transfer the mantle of leadership for St. Gregory School to Jonathan on
July 1, 2009. Jonathan and I have been working this semester in
partnership for a smooth transition of leadership. Numerous authors have
written substantial works on the topic of leadership. Themes such as
nature, tasks, attributes, context, and development of leadership abound. The research on this much
studied topic continues. John Garner’s work On Leadership is a
synthesis of much of his earlier writings. Garner points out that
successful leaders have common characteristics in a least six respects: · They think long-term – beyond the day’s crises,
beyond the quarterly report, beyond the horizon. · In thinking about the entity they are leading, they
grasp its relationship to larger realities – the larger organization, of
which they are a part, conditions external to the organization, global
trends. · They reach and influence constituents beyond their
jurisdiction, beyond boundaries. Thomas Jefferson influenced people all
over Europe. Gandhi influenced people all over the world. In an
organization, leaders extend their reach across bureaucratic boundaries –
often a distinct advantage. · They put heavy emphasis on the tangibles of vision,
values, and motivation and they understand intuitively the non-rational and
unconscious elements in leader-constituent interaction. · They have the political skill to cope with the
conflicting requirements of multiple constituencies. · They think in terms of renewal. The routine
manager tends to accept organizational structure and process as it exists. Garner also suggests that
leadership styles vary among successful leaders. No particular
leadership style necessarily guarantees desired results. Jonathan and Bill’s
leadership styles are not the same, nor should they be. In Walter
Lipmann’s above quote, if you substitute school for nation, that in large
part is a school head’s responsibility. Make sure the mission and
values of a school are known, understood, valued, and practiced.
Establish a vision for the school and create ambitious strategies to accomplish
that vision. Expect that the school practice daily trust, care, and
respect for each individual in the school community. St. Gregory School is
fortunate to attract a person, leader, and educator like Jonathan
Martin. He is an inspiring leader. He understands
leadership. He and I will continue to work in harmony these upcoming
weeks to ensure a successful transition of leadership for St. Gregory School
so that our school’s ongoing advances towards excellence are in no way
interrupted or lessened. In closing, Debbie and I
would like to thank the St. Gregory School Community for making our years
here so rewarding and enjoyable. A special thanks to the Family
Association and students for the beautiful reception and the cards, notes,
and cherished piece of artwork.

COMMUNITY SERVICE IN KENYA This year sixteen St.
Gregory seniors traveled to Kenya for their Senior Internship. Along
with teaching for two weeks at several primary schools near the town of Naro
Moru, the students also assisted in the construction of a new classroom at a
secondary school that is only three years olds. The classrooms for the
sophomores and juniors are simple stone structures. The freshmen, always at
the bottom of the totem pole, are currently using a rough-cut timber
classroom with dirt floors, which is little more than a really nice goat pen. On May 2 the St. Gregory
seniors, several parents, and Fred Roberts broke ground for the new
classroom. The day's task was to dig the foundation trenches, which
were two feet wide, four feet deep, and a total of 66 feet in length.
This was no easy task for after getting through the grass and meager to soil,
the ground was as hard as rock. This was not a job for shovels alone,
but first the dirt had to be broken up using a forked hoe and then moved with
a shovel. While the Kenyans are used to using these tools on a daily
basis, this was very new work for the wazungu (light skinned
people). The group worked all day and by 4 PM they had completed the
task. The following Saturday they
returned to pour cement for the foundation and put down the first three
layers of stone. The morning's work didn't take very long so they moved onto
the next project the exterior of two school buildings and the inside of two
primary school classrooms. There were more hands than brushes, and by early
afternoon we were done. A group of parents had been peeling potatoes
all morning, and by 1 PM the group of roughly St. Gregory students, parents,
and faculty members, roughly 150 in all, sat down on the grass for a communal
meal of mukimo, which is a traditional Kikuyu dish of potatoes, corn and
spinach. The two days of community
service meant much more than a new classroom and a fresh coat of paint.
Through the interaction new friendships were created, everyone learned a bit
more about the other's culture, and the satisfaction of working together
towards a common goal was felt by all.

NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM The very challenging
National Spanish Exam was voluntarily taken by well over 115,000 students
across the country this year. At St. Gregory, the test was given
to all students from the 6th through the 12th grade. Certificates are
awarded to those who score above the 50th percentile nationally. Twenty
eight students at St. Gregory received a certificate of EXCELENCIA because
they scored between the 50th and 75th percentile. Students who
scored between the 75th and 85th percentile received a certificate of
BRONCE. They were Rachel Rosenberg, Jacob Rosenblum, Ryan Green, Juliet
Wilhelmi, Bennett Sawyer, Edouard Matille. Harvey Sayles, Jan Thomas, Alana
Gonzalez and Peter Chipman. Those who scored between the 85th and 95th
percentile are awarded a certificate of PLATA. These students were
Bryan Stilson, Therese Carter, Jacob Lifton, Andrea Wilhelmi, and Alex
McNerny. This year no student at our school was in the top 5
percentile. Congratulations to all these students for their hard work
and national recognition. I would also like to thank the parents for agreeing
to have your children experience this exam. It is an opportunity to
compare ourselves to others around the country. |

SENIORS, ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY? All
upcoming seniors are encouraged to take advantage of the college application
essay course, which will take place over three consecutive Saturdays: August 15 from 9:00-noon August 22 from 10:00-noon and August 29 from 10:00-noon The
course will cover the production of the college essay from start to finish.
Students will learn the purpose, organization, style, and strategies of the
essay. They will also study actual samples and write drafts of at least three
types commonly requested by schools. If students already have application
forms, they may work on the actual essays required by their schools. By the
end of the workshop, students will have completed at least one standard
length essay as well as one personal statement. The
course should relieve senior stress by allowing a head start on the
time-consuming process of the college application. Though we will only be
focusing on the essay during these three Saturdays, the overall application
process will continue throughout the year with St. Gregory’s college
counselor, Mrs. Kate Schmidt. This fall I will also be available for editing
the essays of those students who take the course. There
is no tuition for the class, but there is a $100 fee to cover costs (your
account will be book-billed upon signing up). In addition, students will need
to purchase the paperback text, On Writing the College Application Essay, by
Harry Bauld, and they need to have this text read by our first class meeting.
Ordering this text through Amazon will probably be the easiest way to find
it. Please
email Elizabeth Young eyoun@stgregoryschool.org
or have your child stop by the front office to sign up. |

TEXT BOOK BUY BACKS Wondering what you are going to do with used school books?
Good news! MBS Direct, St. Gregory’s text book provider, may buy back
some used text books from you. Go to the MBS website and
click on "Sell Your Books". You will be directed to a log-in screen
where you enter your log-in name and password (if you brought your books from
MBS last summer you already have a log-in and password). Follow the
on-screen prompts to enter the ISBN numbers from our books and MBS will
provide a quote to buy back the books. If the quote is acceptable,
print out a prepaid shipping label, box and ship your books, and MBS will
send you a check after they receive the books. Please note
that MBS may not buy back every book you purchased last fall. Their
decisions on which books to buy back are based on what they believe they need
to restock their shelves for next year. |
