St. Gregory students again fared well in the National French Contest, a one-hour, multiple-choice test administered each March. Here are the results for those who ranked in the top ten in the state of Arizona, as well as those who made the national ranking:
At Level 1A: Elyse Buscema ‘09 and Tyler Rogers ‘08 tied for 3rd in the state and 8th in the nation. They both scored in the 90th percentile. Junior Liz Miranda placed 7th in state at Level 2A. At Level 3A: junior Bryan Stilson was 3rd in the state and 5th in the nation (95th percentile). Many seniors placed well at Level 4A: Dan Kelly finished 7th, Sean Siler 8th, AJ Shatz 9th, and Maria Schneider and Bryanne Wadington tied for 10th in the state. Senior Melissa Goodman was 1st in state and junior Isabella Tudisco-Sadacca was 2nd in state at Level 5A.
At the Level 1B freshman Lauren Eisenberg was 4th in state and 9th in the nation. Category B indicates that the student has one French-speaking parent.
Category C indicates that French is spoken by both parents of the testing student. Matthew Lunt ’08 and Aminata Dieng ’09 tied for 3rd in state at Level 4C. At Level 5C sophomore Edouard Mattille was 1st in state and 4th in the nation, placing in the 95th percentile.
As an upper-level non-native speaker who ranked at the national level, Bryan Stilson has earned a chance to enter a lottery for an Alliance Française-sponsored week in Paris. Félicitations à tous! |
Meanwhile, in other French news, the French Club had its annual dinner out on Saturday, April 19. A dozen students gathered at Bistro Philippe to enjoy a wonderful meal, paid for with the proceeds of their bake sales. Meanwhile, the proceeds from the sale of the Juilet Wilhelmi-designed t-shirts were donated to Heifer International, a non-profit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability. The French Club’s gift will purchase a llama for a family in the Andes. Since llamas are excellent pack animals and sources of wool, this gift helps a family in need help itself. It also turns recipients into donors as each recipient of a Heifer animal promises to give back to the community by passing on an offspring of their animal to a neighbor in need – creating a living chain of giving. This was a joint project with the Spanish Club. There are still a few llama t-shirts left. If you are interested in helping the French club and securing your own llama t-shirt, contact French Club advisor Amy Clashman.
Finally, the French 1 class was treated to a guest speaker, Marie Noëlle Brevault, who spoke about her native country of Senegal on April 25. The students asked questions they had prepared in French, and Mme Brevault answered in French with occasional summaries from Madame Clashman. Mme Bevault and her husband relocated to Tucson in January when her husband was hired at the University. The students, who are beginning a unit on West Africa, enjoyed the opportunity to speak with someone from Senegal.

Special thanks to the Clark, Reaves, Greenfeld, Gonzales, Pinto, and Hansen families who fed the cast and crew throughout the rehearsal process; Leah St. Lawrence, Kari Kuehn, and the AP art students who brought New York City to life; Jacob Lifton for his ‘dummy’; all non-St. Gregory musicians for making "Annie" sing; Donna Quinton for volunteering her time and travel expense to venture down from Canada to design the costumes for the show; the Fine Arts department and all St. Gregory staff who help out in some way – through donation of props, costumes, set pieces, energy, and time.

On May 1 Upper School Dean of Students Fred Roberts and eleven seniors will be traveling to Kenya for their senior internships. While in Kenya the seniors will be assisting at six primary schools near the town of Naro Moru, on the western slopes of Mt. Kenya. The schools where the seniors teach are very basic, most with dirt floors and rough-cut timber walls. Students sit three to a desk, often sharing textbooks and writing material. There are no white boards, smart boards, or slate chalkboards. A black board is just that, a piece of flat plywood painted black. None of this, however, deters the young Kenyan students' enthusiasm and excitement to be in the classroom and learn.
Along with teaching, the St. Gregory group will be part of two community service projects. One project will be to put new cement floors in six classrooms at one school. At another school the students will help to put in a new fence and front gate. While primary school education in Kenya is free, most of the school improvements are the responsibility of the parents, many of whom are small farm owners with very little money to spare. This St. Gregory group has been fund-raising since last September, and, with a matching grant from the Stephen Lightman Family Supporting Foundation, the group has raised $7,500.00, enough to complete both projects. Many thanks to everyone who supported this effort!
While in Kenya the students will be writing a daily blog that will be posted at the Tucson Citizen website. To see the blog, go to tucsoncitizen.com/blog/ and click on “Kenya” from the menu at the top. We hope you enjoy following their travels and adventures.

The St. Gregory Middle School Chess Team competed in the 2008 Arizona State Scholastic Chess Championship on April 26th and 27th in Flagstaff, Arizona. The students that competed were Jennie Bass ‘13, Spencer Brodkey ‘12, Samuel Cotter ‘12, and Nathan Hancock ‘13. The team finished in and Samuel Cotter was fourth individually. Congratulations to these fine students! |

Congratulations to sophomore Jason Huo and junior Claire Tatman on their selection to participate in St. Andrew's Bach Society’s "Bach Lives! Project" on Saturday, April 26th. The master class featuring instrumentalists of all experience levels and focusing on Bach's solo repertoire was led by Tucson Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Steven Moeckel. Jason, an oboist, and Claire, a violinist, each performed excerpts of Bach's solo works and received individual coaching from Moeckel on the "universal elements of style and interpretation essential to the performance of Bach's solo repertoire". |
Latin teacher Jeff Clashman translates a Latin inscription at the Benedictine Convent.

On April 29, the seventh grade participated in Religion Day. Students visited Congregation Chofetz Chayim, the Tara Mahayana Buddhist Center, the Benedictine Convent, and the Islamic Center to hear representatives of some of the world's major religions discuss the basic tenets of their faith. It was a day of discovery as students asked thoughtful questions in each of these places of worship. One of the outcomes of this day was the realization that each of these religions asks us to "treat others in the manner we would like to be treated." As global citizens, St. Gregory students understand the importance of deepening their understanding of world cultures and religions. Special thanks to our hosts and educators Rabbi Becker (Congregation Chofetz Chayim), Jacquie Gregor (Tara Mayayana Buddhist Center), Sister Mary Jane (Benedictine Convent), and Imam Tarek Abdelraouf (Islamic Center). |

The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams cruised to an undefeated record against 1A competition. Juniors Sanghyuk Seo and Rachel Rosenberg have led the way, playing in the number one singles spot for the boys’ and girls’ teams respectively. Neither has lost a match against region opponents. The 1A State Tournament will be Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3, at the Tucson Racquet Club. Go Hawks!

The boys’ golf team competed in the 1A/2A East Regional Tournament on Friday, April 25. The top 5 teams and top 10 individuals qualify to compete in the two-day state tournament May 5-6. The team played fairly well but fell four strokes shy of qualifying for the state tournament. Though the golfers are disappointed not to be continuing to play as a team, freshman Tyler Woodruff shot an 83 and qualified to represent St. Gregory as an individual. Congratulation to Tyler and teammates, senior AJ Shatz, juniors John Anderson, Robert Porter, Bennett Sawyer, Hong-Bin Yoon, and sophomore Nick Walker on a great season. |

Yearbooks will be distributed on May 23rd and cost $85.00 this year. The yearbook is entirely student-designed. Juniors Christen Maguire and Nikki McNerney served as co-editors and sophomore Amanda Kuhn is the copy editor. The DVD that will accompany the yearbook was student-produced. Seniors Michael Bess and Varun Vij spent the year collecting hundreds of additional photographs from both the middle and upper schools. Our thanks to Upper School History teacher Pat Raynolds for guiding the yearbook staff for the past two years. Next year the yearbook class will be taught by photography teacher Shannon Smith, who has lots of experience with photography, layout and design, and desk-top publishing. |

ART EXHIBIT |
From May 5th to May 15th 2008, contemporary photographs of the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague will be exhibited in the lobby space of the St. Gregory theater. There will be a reception open to the public on Wednesday, May 7th from 3 to 6 p.m. The Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague is a major historical monument and pilgrimage site. The cemetery is one of the few not destroyed in eastern and central Europe during and after the Second World War. These color photographs by St. Gregory parent Virgil Hancock (Nathan ’13) are unusual in that most professional photography of the cemetery has been in black and white. Color makes the decaying gray, purple and orange headstones literally alive in the greens of the grass, vines, trees and lichen which touch and surround these memories of the forgotten Jewish ghetto of fifteenth to eighteenth century Prague.
