Bus Service to Northwest Tucson

What: In an effort to increase enrollment, St. Gregory is providing daily roundtrip bus service for the 2008-2009 school year from the northwest Tucson area to St. Gregory. The exact route and the specific stops will be established once the School knows who will be riding the bus.

Hours: The route will be scheduled so that the bus arrives at the School by 7:50 each morning. The bus will leave the School daily at 5 pm.

Capacity: The bus can hold 30 students. Students who are new to St. Gregory will have priority. Existing students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cost: No charge to students who are new to St. Gregory. Existing students will pay $5.00 per day for the service, even if you only ride the bus one way.

Why is St. Gregory providing a bus only from the Northwest?
The bus is being introduced as a way to increase enrolment. The School is hoping to attract new students from the fast-growing northwest Tucson area, including Oro Valley and Marana.

Why leave St. Gregory at 5:00 pm when school gets out at 3:15?
Many students have after-school clubs and activities. The 5 pm departure allows time for students to participate in these extracurricular activities.

What will a student do between 3:15 pm and 5 pm if she or he does not participate in an after-school club or sport?
There is an extended-day program for Middle School students for an additional fee. Upper School students can use the gym or library.

Do I have to ride both ways?
No, but the fee is still $5.00 per day.

What if my child is sick?
Parents should follow normal procedure for contacting the School when their child is ill. There is no extra communication required for the bus.

What arrangements can we make for paying the bus fee?
Bus fees can be book-billed and will only apply on days when school is in session. There will be no charge for holidays or vacations.

Is there a cost break for a second student from the same family?
There are no discounts for multiple family members who choose to ride the bus.

Who will provide the bus service?
The school has contracted with Bee Line Transportation to provide the bus and driver for the northwest route.

Are there seatbelts?
No.

Is the bus supervised?
No, but there are safety rules for riding on the bus, such as having to remain seated when the bus is in motion, not changing seats when the bus is stopped, not sticking hands or arms outside the bus windows, behaving in a respectful manner, etc. The bus driver will explain the rules and enforce them.

Will the driver be the same each day?
Yes, the bus company plans to staff the St. Gregory bus for the length of the school year.

How will the bus be identified?
The bus will have a magnetic sign on the side with the St. Gregory College Preparatory School logo. There will also be a sign in the window at the front of the bus.

When will we know the exact stops and pickup times?
We will determine the bus stops and pickup times once we know how many students will be riding the bus and where they live.

If this bus is successful, will we consider expanding it to other areas?
The School is always evaluating options to improve, and we will be carefully analyzing the results of this first bus experience.
