Athletics
St. Gregory believes that participation in athletics is instrumental in helping students mature. In addition to promoting the objective of achieving physical fitness, the School makes an effort to develop the important skills of self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork.A fixture on the Southern Arizona baseball scene for nearly two decades,
he has enjoyed enormous success at every level of the game. He led his
Green Fields Country Day School team to the State title game while coaching
at the northwest-side school; served as Recruiting Coordinator for the Pima
Community College team in 2010 and '11; is currently an Associate Scout
for the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau; and works with local youth
as part of 520 Elite Baseball, an organization of which
he is founder and Director.
He previously served as Athletic Director at Green Fields from 1999-2007.
While there, the Griffins had one of the top small-school athletic programs
in the state of Arizona. Under Acuña leadership, the school's teams
(volleyball and soccer in the Fall, boys' and girls' basketball in the winter, and baseball and softball
in the spring) were all highly successful and all made multiple trips to their respective State Tournaments.
As an administrator, he also hired the school's all-time winningest coaches in volleyball, softball,
and girls' basketball.
Acuña has a Bachelor of Science degree in Justice Studies, with a minor in Sociology, from Arizona
State University and has completed multiple post-graduate courses toward a Master's degree in
Administration.
His goal is nothing short of making St. Gregory the premier athletic program in the state,
providing top-notch coaching and facilities, thus giving the St. Gregory student-athletes every opportunity
to succeed and excel.
Athletic facilities include playing fields for soccer, baseball, and softball, an indoor gym for volleyball and basketball, and two outdoor basketball courts. The School uses the tennis courts and swimming pool at nearby Fort Lowell Park. Housed in the gym is an athletic training center that features aerobic, free-weight, and variable-resistant equipment.
Middle school students participate in seven activities on an interscholastic basis. Fall sports include girls' volleyball, tennis for boys and girls, and football for boys and girls. In the winter there are girls' softball and soccer for boys and girls. The year closes with a spring schedule of boys' and girls' basketball.
Teams participate in a variety of leagues and conferences. Upper School activities are sanctioned by the Arizona Interscholastic Association. Middle School participation is governed by the Tucson Independent Athletic League. The history of the middle school athletic program includes numerous league championships. Both programs utilize state-of-the-art transportation and are served by a certified athletic trainer. A majority of St. Gregory students are involved in one or more sports.
