After Paco Varela graduated from St. Gregory in 1983, he earned a Biomedical Engineering Degree at Johns Hopkins University and has been working in the medical device industry ever since. His career has included roles in clinical training, product management, and international marketing with 3M Health Care, Terumo Cardiovascular Systems, and Bard Peripheral Vascular. Currently he is working in Global Marketing Management with the Energy-based Devices business unit of Covidien in Boulder, CO. Lisa Ilka Abrams is an attorney with the law firm of Karp Heurlin Weiss PC in Tucson. She practices in the areas of school, juvenile, and family law. Ms. Abrams is counsel for Sunnyside Unified School District and Green Fields Country Day School. She previously served as in-house counsel for Tucson Unified School District. Ms. Abrams is a frequent lecturer on school law and has spoken at the Southern Arizona Education Leadership Consortium, for the Tucson Unified School District, and for the Arizona School Boards Association Annual Legal Conference. She earned her A.B., magna cum laude, Phi Bata Kappa at Smith College and her J.D. at the University of Arizona. Erika Evensen is a manager in the Financial Services practice of BearingPoint. She was also leader of the National Consumer Directed Heath Care solution for BearingPoint’s health care practice. She is responsible for and involved in a wide range of consulting assignments covering healthcare, finance, business, IT strategies, outsourcing studies, solution design, and development methodologies. Trace Shapiro earned a BA from Sarah Lawrence ('93) in Human Biology: Psychoneuroimmunology, Stress Physiology, and Cancer Prevention and an MA from Stanford University ('94) in Health Psychology. She designed health promotion programming for Stanford University and other universities in the area of women’s health, sexual assault prevention, and body image awareness/eating disorder prevention. Trace has been an entrepreneur, with businesses including a women's bookstore, a women's publishing company, a full-service Euro-Asian Medical Spa, and a small-business consulting firm (performing demographic research, operations development and implementation, financial management, and full-service marketing/design). Justin Prust graduated from Arizona State University in 2000 with a B.A. in Political Science after spending six months of his senior year studying in London at the London School of Economics. He received his MBA from Tulane in 2006. Justin is currently a strategy consultant helping firms raise venture and angel capital. From 2000-2005 Justin called Marina Del Rey, CA home, but after marrying his wife, Kelley, they decided that Tucson was a better place to raise a family. Jean Hoffman recently moved back to Tucson and is devoting most of her time to 9 Queens- a nonprofit organization dedicated to extending the benefits of chess education to under-served and under-represented children. After graduating from St. Gregory in 1999, Jean earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University (2003) and a master’s degree in teacher education from Harvard University (2007). Jack Gillum is a business reporter for the Arizona Daily Star, where he covers technology and aerospace. He is a 2007 graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and a 2006 graduate of Santa Clara University in California. Jack is happy to have returned to Tucson -- a city he never thought he'd love -- and to St Gregory. When he's not spending 12 hours a day inside a newsroom, he enjoys a hike in the Chiricahuas, a round of bowling or an evening with old friends. Ashley Vij is currently a sophomore at the George Washington University. She is studying Global Public Health and Development and plans to minor in English. Ashley is currently interning at the Population Reference Bureau where she gathers data in a Maternal and Child Health Program. Recently with friends she started a GW Literary Society that promotes literacy among DC urban high schools. Carolyn Wise graduated from St. Gregory in 2006 and then attended the University of Denver for a year. She is currently enrolled at the University of Arizona, where she is majoring in BioChemistry, with minors in Spanish and Math. Amber Horvath is a freshman at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. At the moment, she is majoring in English Literature with a minor in African studies. She is living in a special leadership house called the Shaw Leadership House/Program, where she and nineteen other freshman explore the meaning of community-based leadership and service projects.
